Social Media and Workplace Firings

The National Labor Relations Board accused a company of illegally firing an employee because of her criticism of her boss on Facebook. According to Lafe Solomon general counsel at the Board, employees have a right to such comments under the National Labor Relations Act. This is a federal right.

Morgan, Lewis and Bookius a law firm specializing in labor law sent this warning to its clients: “All private sector employers should take note, “regardless “of whether their work force is represented by a union. Employers should review their Internet and social media policies to determine whether they are susceptible to an allegation that the policy would ‘reasonably tend to chill employees’ “in the exercise of their rights to discuss wages, working conditions and unionization.” Learn more

Social Media Overload

Today in The New York Times, Nick Bilton reexamines our use of technology:

He as others suggests that we may be on sensory overload. That ‘friends’ are not true friends and personal relationships suffer.

Recently at a blues club there were 6 friends sitting at a table. Four out of the six continually texted, looked up stuff, took images of each other and passed their devices among themselves. My initial reaction was, how distracting, why can’t they just listen to the music, how rude that they need devices to conduct in person conversations. That analysis may have been too harsh. Previous generations at a similar venue may have used a photo album or pointed to a print article. There should be a point however when we are off the grid, have the opportunity to build personal relationships and smell the roses.

What do you think?
